Robert Whitehead Obituary

Robert Whitehead, went home to be with his Savior on Sunday, February 25th, 2024, after experiencing complications from open heart surgery.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Art & Ruth Whitehead, brother Richard Whitehead, and son-in-law Joe Stewart.

He is survived by his wife of 45 years, Judy (Gallagher) Whitehead.  He was the proud Dad to son Zachary Whitehead and his wife Whitney of Troy, Ohio, and daughter Abigail Stewart of East Liverpool.  He was even prouder Grandpa to his 6 grandkids:  Chloe and Nathan Stewart and Troy, Paxton, Maddox and Hudson Whitehead.  And lastly but certainly not least, his faithful basset hound, Rocky.

Bob graduated from Columbiana High School in 1957, where he was a proud member of the Clipper Band.  He served in the U.S. Air Force Reserve from June 1957-December 1957.  After his service, he began a career in the printing business. He worked for several newspapers including ones in Pennsylvania, Iowa, and California.  After several years in newspaper printing, he began a career in printer sales with the former AB Dick Company, where he held various sales and management positions working in Pittsburgh, Chicago, and Hartford.  After retirement in 1995, Bob became self-employed buying and selling printing equipment throughout the Tri-State area.  In 2005, Bob began working for the State of West Virginia Division of Corrections.  He was a manager of the print shop at the Industries Building at Northern Regional Jail & Correctional Facility in Moundsville, WV.  This job became one of the biggest blessings in his life.  He was able to do a job he loved while also teaching inmates a valuable trade, mentoring and ministering, and forming friendships and bonds that have lasted years.  He retired after 16 years of service in 2021.  In the last 2 years, Bob had been working for the Way Station in East Liverpool.  He was a vital part of the Transitioning to Triumph program which works with individuals who have come out of the prison system, veterans who have come out of the services, and those who had various other needs.

Bob loved golf, he was an avid Ohio State Buckeyes, Steelers, and Pirates fan and he loved to read.  Some of his greatest joys were watching his son play high school basketball at ELCS and cheering on his grandkids in all their various sports.

Bob was an active member at Northside Community Church where he served as an elder, was a former Sunday School teacher, and was a member of the security team.  He was a former board member at the East Liverpool Christian School as well the golf coach.  Bob was also a current member of the Tri-State Coon Hunters & Sportsman’s Club in East Liverpool, where he loved to spend time talking, target shooting, and working and organizing turkey shoots.

Bob was a people person at heart who never met a stranger.  You would always find him with a big smile, a story to tell, and inviting those he met to church.  He will be greatly missed by all.

An open memorial service will be held at Northside Community Church on Saturday, March 2nd at 11 am, with Pastor Larry Rose officiating.  A private family burial will take place earlier that morning.

The family asks that in lieu of flowers, donations may be made to The Way Station at PO Box 449, Columbiana Ohio 44408 for the Transitioning to Triumph program.
