Paul D. Jackson

Paul D. Jackson, 92 of Chester, WV. passed away on June 8, 2019, at St. Elizabeth Hospital in Boardman following a brief illness.

He was born on January 17, 1927, at Little Birch, WV., the son of Loyd and Dollie Snyder Jackson. Paul graduated from Sutton High School, Glenville State College, and he received his master’s degree from West Virginia University. He taught science seven years at Greenbrier High School, ten years at Chester High School and Oak Glen High School. He also taught driver education. Paul received a principal’s certificate and served as a principal at Chester Junior High School from 1965 until his retirement in 1984.

Paul’s favorite outdoor activities were fishing, hunting, and gardening. He would proudly share his vegetables with neighbors, friends, and relatives. He will be greatly missed by all his family members. He especially liked fishing with his brother and brother-in-law at Lake Okeechobee, FL., and his son in Alaska. He and his wife Velma loved to spend their vacations traveling in his RV to Canada and the Rocky Mountains. They also made several trips to visit son Larry in Alaska and daughter Jane in Charleston, WV. Paul is survived by his wife of 70 years, Velma Jean Shipman Jackson, his daughter, Jane Elizabeth (Richard) Theis, and his son, Larry Paul (Adela) Jackson. His grandchildren are Kelly (Jason) Shinn, and Emily (Ben) Ridgway, and grandson, Christopher Jackson, and one great-grandson, Logan Shinn. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two sisters, Helen Slack and Ruth Harris. Also surviving are his brother, Leslie Harold Jackson, and brothers-in-law, Kermit Harris and Russell Slack.

Paul was a member of the Westminster Presbyterian Church where he held various offices in past years. Rev. Katrina Lewis will conduct funeral services on Thursday, June 13, at 11:00 a.m. at the Arner Funeral Chapel in Chester. Friends are invited to visit the family at the funeral home on Wednesday from 2:00 to 4:00 and 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. Following services, he will be entombed at Shadow Lawn Memory Gardens in Newell.
