Oplas “Jane” Mehaffey, 68 of New Cumberland, passed away peacefully at her home on Wednesday, July 15, 2020, after becoming suddenly ill.
Born in Morgantown, WV., on February 19, 1952, Jane was a daughter of the late James Barr Sr. and Reita (Gump) Barr.
Jane's uncanny sense of humor and loving and caring personality will be deeply missed by her family and friends. She had an immense love for animals and dedicated her whole life to the health and well being of animals by fostering them, finding them homes, and making sure she was doing her part by encouraging spay and neuter. Jane was a volunteer for many animal organizations, namely Animal Care and Welfare and the Hancock County Animal Shelter. In fact, Jane was such an animal lover that her family is convinced she crossed the Rainbow Bridge herself and was met by the hundreds of dogs and cats that she had rescued over the years. They are sure her reunion was a joyous one.
Jane retired as the librarian from the Swaney Memorial Library in New Cumberland and was a member of the graduating class at Oak Glen High School in 1970.
She leaves behind her husband, Joseph Mehaffey; her sisters, Shirley Baker of Toronto and Connie (Duane) Mason of New Cumberland, her brother, James Barr Jr. of New Cumberland, several nieces and nephews, and a large community of friends, all of whom she loved deeply.
Her arrangements have been entrusted to the Arner Funeral Chapel in Chester and in fulfilling Jane’s wishes, no services are planned. She will be laid to rest with her parents at Locust Hill Cemetery in Chester.
The family is encouraging that memorial contributions be made in Jane’s memory to Animal Care and Welfare, 316 Noll Rd., Georgetown, PA. 15043.
