Lester (Pete) Smith, 89 of New Cumberland, WV, formerly of Chester, WV, and Douds, Iowa, passed on Monday, August 14, 2023. Pete was born in Newell, WV, on April 5, 1934, to the late William Pearl and Gladys (DeBee) Smith. Pete was preceded in death by his wife of 55 years, Carol Ann (Wright) Smith, a daughter Lisa Kay Smith, and a brother Larry J. Smith.
Pete graduated from Wells High School in 1952 before beginning work. He was a hardworking, fun-loving, husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, and friend. Pete worked and retired from Macintosh-Hemphill Steel Mill in Midland, PA, after 31 years. He went on to manage a cattle ranch in Iowa before returning to West Virginia and working for New Cumberland Cemetery and until recently with Six Enterprises at Wayne Six (Newell) Toll Bridge.
Pete was an avid boater, camper, hunter, and sports fan. He enjoyed watching the Steelers, and Oak Glen Sports. His favorite pastime, however, was riding horses and team penning. At the age of 69, Pete was a winner of a National Team Penning Championship.
Pete is survived by his loving companion, Sandy Graham of New Cumberland, WV, his daughters, Leslie Ann (Ed) Fields of New Cumberland, WV, Debie (Bruce) Davis of Weston, WV, Lori (Bob) Plummer of East Liverpool, Ohio, and his son Barry (Mark Dalto) of Lansing, Ohio. Pete had ten grandchildren, Sarah Fields, Allyson Carr, Doug Davis, Stephanie Singleton, Matthew Maola, Luke Maola, Gus Weekly, Katie Adkins, Maggie Wells, and Emma Norman. He also had sixteen great-grandchildren.
Visitation will be held at the Arner Funeral Chapel in Chester, WV, on Friday, August 18, from 4:00 to 8:00 p.m. Visitation will also take place on Saturday, August 19, at 10:00 a.m. with services to be held at 11:00 a.m. with Pastor Tim Gola of the New Manchester Christian Church officiating. In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made to Oak Glen Alumni Association in the care of Dave Foltz, 95 Golden Bear Drive, New Cumberland, WV. 26047.
