Kurt Culler Obituary

Kurt A. Culler (Coach) passed away peacefully the morning of August 11, 2021, at Jefferson Hospital in Pennsylvania.

Born March 13, 1947, in Steubenville, Ohio, he was the son of Lloyd and Betty Culler of Weirton, WV.  He was quarterback of the Weir High football team in high school and went on to play football for West Virginia Tech and graduated in 1969, with a degree in mathematics and education.  Following graduation, he was the shop teacher at Chester Junior High where his goal was to keep students from losing fingers. He later took a position as a math teacher at Oak Glen High School, teaching students to use numbers, not calculators.  He was further involved with the school by coaching football, basketball, and track.  His ultimate pride in the role of coach was to guide the Oak Glen Lady Bears to their 1999 victory as state champions.

In addition to being an educator, he was a luthier, camper, carpenter, bricklayer, and mechanic. He designed and built the beautiful home that his family lived in Chester, WV for 37 years.  He loved bluegrass music and played in his band, “The Varmints”, and he wrote several of the songs on their album.  He was known to every music and pawnshop in the region as the go-to person to repair or value acoustic instruments.

He is survived by his wife of 52 years, Ann Culler, his daughter Jennifer Culler and her partner Keith Vaughn, and his son, Kurt M. Culler (Buster).  Also left to cherish his memory are his sisters, Judy McGlothlin and her husband Bruce and Pat Jones and her partner Fred Muehl; a brother-in-law, Walter Martin, and his wife Jeanie; nieces and nephews, Molly and Jeep Henry, Michael and Beckie McGlothlin, Kenneth Jones, Jeff, and Shannon Martin, and Karri and Chris Kennedy; numerous great-nieces and nephews and also the adopted family of Grandma Sheila Sayer and the Robbie Edwards family.
He will be very much missed by his family and friends, most especially his buddy Henry Longfellow.

A special thank you goes to the DCI Dialysis for the kindness and care over the years.
The Coach Culler Oak Glen Lady Bears Basketball Scholarship has been opened in his memory at Oak Glen High School and donations are requested in lieu of flowers.  Checks can be made out to Oak Glen High School and can be sent to the school at 195 Golden Bear Drive, New Cumberland, WV 26047.
