Joyce Ann Mathias, loving mother and grandmother, 77 of East Liverpool passed at her home where she was being lovingly cared for by her family on Saturday, September 16, 2023. She had been diagnosed with heart disease three months prior.
A lifelong resident of East End, Joyce was the daughter of the late James and Janice Johnston. She graduated from East Liverpool High School, class of 1964. She attended East Liverpool City Hospital School of Nursing and worked at the hospital for 35 years in the Critical Care Unit as a RN. She was known to be a kind, compassionate worker, who always put her patients first. After being together since they were in junior high, she’s now reunited with her loving husband Fred, who preceded her in death in 2021. They shared an indescribable love story. Together they shared their passion for camping, fishing, and fun trips with loved ones. Joyce enjoyed crocheting and reading as well.
She will be deeply missed by her sister Kathryn (Bill) Show, her children Ross (Amy) Mathias, Mary Kay (Shane) Hoppel, and DeeDee (Jeff) Giles. She adored her grandchildren whom she spoiled immensely, Sabrina Hoppel, Clay Parker, Jack Mathias, Michaella Mathias, and Miles Mathias. Joyce shared a special relationship with her nieces and nephews, Joey (Kerrie) Spooner, Janice (Adam) Johnson, and their children Cailynn (Martin) Shields, Chris (Morgan) Croxall, Austin Spooner, Bryce Spooner, Boone Johnson, Wyatt Johnson, Blake Swartz, Maggie Brewer, Cyrus Croxall and loved them like they were her own. Family always came first to her.
Family and friends may attend calling hours planned on Tuesday, September 19th, 2023, at the Arner Funeral Chapel, from 4:00 PM-8:00 PM. No services are planned per her wishes. Joyce’s final resting place will be completed at a later date with her husband in Bolts Fork Ross Cemetery in Kentucky alongside her parents. In lieu of flowers memorial contributions can be made to East Liverpool Spay and Neuter Program founded by Jo Ann White at 142 West 6th St. East Liverpool, OH. 43920, In care of the Auditor Marilyn Bosco. Joyce cared for many stray cats over the years while loving her own Dixie, Demi, Lucky, and Mathew who recently was laid to rest.
