Loving husband, father, and pap, John R. “Dick” Shroades Jr. passed away at UPMC Magee Hospital in Pittsburgh on Sunday, March 15, 2020, following a courageous battle with cancer.
74 years old, Dick was born May 22, 1945, in East Liverpool to the late John R. Shroades Sr. and Hazel I. Stafford Shroades.
He retired as a Millwright from J&L Steel in Midland, and he was a Christian by faith. Dick proudly served his country with the US Navy as a gunner’s mate in Vietnam during the Vietnam Conflict. A member of the Newell American Legion Post 114, and VFW Post 6450, he was a past Commander of the Lawrenceville American Legion. Dick was an avid outdoorsman, a collector of guns, and a Lifetime Member of the NRA, he loved to hunt and fish. A 1965 graduate of Oak Glen High School, he had enjoyed being a HAM radio operator for several years.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his grandson, David McGraw.
He married his wife, Linda Wedgewood Shroades on January 25, 1969, together they created many special memories and she survives at home. Dick will be deeply missed by his children, Cheryl McGraw, Chrissy (Pat) Tustin, Terry (Tonya) Shroades, and John R. Shroades III, all of Chester. Also, he is survived by two sisters, Janet Stowers of Lisbon, and Gloria Still of Chester. Dick’s greatest joy was his grandchildren, Krista McGraw, Linsey Vulgamore, Whitney Shroades, Kaitlyn Van Dyke, Tyler Grim, Terrilynn Shroades, Jesse Davis, and Caleb Shroades, and his great-grandchildren, Landyn Shroades, Riliegh Shroades, Shilyn Kane, and Abigeil, Bam-Bam, and Luke Van Dyke.
Dick’s life will be celebrated at the Arner Funeral Chapel in Chester on Thursday, March 19 at 1:00 p.m. Interment with full military honors by the Chester American Legion Post 121 and VFW Post 6450 Honor Guard, and the US Navy Honor Guard will follow at Locust Hill Cemetery. Friends are invited to visit with the family at the funeral home on Wednesday from 2:00-4:00 and 6:00-8:00 p.m.
