James Foss Powell, 76 of Weirton, passed away at the Weirton Medical Center on Tuesday, February 25, 2020, after becoming suddenly ill at his home.
James was born in New Cumberland on June 17, 1943, to the late Ralph and Mildred Foss Powell.
He was a veteran of the US Marine Corps and a retiree of both Weirton Steel and the Hancock County Assessor’s office. Throughout his life, James loved hunting and rooting for the Nebraska Cornhuskers and WVU Mountaineers. A passionate civil war reenactor, he was the founder of the 27th Virginia Shriver Greys. Also, he was a graduate of New Cumberland High School.
In addition to his parents, James was preceded in death by his daughter, Tracey Lynn Powell.
Along with his wife, Joyce Amendola Powell, left to cherish his memory are his daughters, Jennifer Powell and Jocelyn (Jason) Seacrist; granddaughters, Addison and Emma Seacrist and Michaela Amendola; his sister, Carol (Lou) Pongracz; his step-son, Michael (Carol) Amendola; his niece, nephew, and cousins; his former wife and mother of his daughters, Donna Manypenny; and his beloved canine companion, Micah.
His family wishes to thank the first responders, doctors, and staff at the Weirton Medical Center for their compassionate care.
In keeping with the wishes of James, there will be no funeral services. His family is planning a memorial service for a later date. Services are in the care of the Arner Funeral Chapel in Chester. Memorial contributions may be made in James' name to the Hancock County K9 Unit, P.O. Box 2206, Weirton, WV., or to the Wounded Warrior Project, www.woundedwarriorproject.org.
