Harry Melvin Hobbs, 74, of West Point, passed peacefully at his home on Saturday, April 23, 2022, from the devastating effects of cancer. He was under the wonderful care of his wife, Helen McManus Hobbs.

He was born in East Liverpool on September 27, 1947. A son of the late Wesley M and Jessie M. Six Hobbs, Mel grew up in Chester.

After 40 years, he retired from Murray Trucking as the purchasing agent and service manager. Mel was a member and Elder at the Lisbon Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, and he was a 1965 graduate of Oak Glen High School. A member of the Free and Accepted Masons, he was a proud veteran of the US Army, serving in Germany during the Vietnam War. Growing up in the 1950s and 1960s, Mel had a great affinity for fast cars and drag racing, and throughout the years, owned many a fast car. Also, he loved searching out quaint restaurants and enjoying great food. Mel’s greatest passion in life though was time spent enjoying his grandchildren.

In addition to his parents, one son, Charles David Reed, and three grandchildren preceded him in death.

Mel leaves his loving wife, Helen McManus Hobbs who he married on June 26, 1989, his children, Ben Hobbs of East Liverpool, Dan Reed of Austin, TX., Renee Reed of East Liverpool, Carol Stephan of Sandy Utah, Greg (Stefanie) Reed of Bow, New Hampshire, Crystal (Ryan) Johnson, of Van Alstyne, TX., Jennifer (Andy) Britton of Wentzville, MO., and Matt (Massiel) Reed of Bow, New Hampshire, his brother, Marshall (Rosemary) Hobbs of Chester, and his sister, Martha (Bob) Cheeks of Lisbon. Also, there are twenty-seven grandchildren, and eight great-grandchildren.

Bishop James Kirk will celebrate Mel’s life at the Lisbon Church, 7250 Lisbon Rd., Lisbon, OH., on Friday, April 29, at 1:00 p.m. Friends are invited to visit with the family at church on Friday from 11:00 a.m. until the time of the service at 1:00 p.m. Following the services, Mel will be laid to rest at the Locust Hill Cemetery in Chester where the Chester VFW Post 6450 Honor Guard and the US Army will accord full military honors. The Arner Funeral Chapel in Chester is assisting with these arrangements.
