Dorothy Mary “Dot” Burda passed away peacefully on Wednesday, August 16, 2023, at East Liverpool City Hospital. She was 101 years old.
Born on April 1, 1922, in Sturgeon, PA, she was the daughter of Jules and Valentine Blancheon Samuel. Dot was very proud of her French heritage.
She was a 1939 graduate of North Fayette High School. She attended Business Training College in Pittsburgh which later became Point Park College. After graduation, she became employed as a telephone operator at the Pennsylvania Bell Telephone Company in Pittsburgh.
Dot met her husband, John Burda, on a train while commuting to work. They were married on May 11, 1947, and moved to Chester, WV shortly afterward.
Dot was a traveler and often told her adult children to “go while you can”. She and two friends went to Anchorage and Fairbanks, Alaska at age 75, and she and family members toured France when she was 80. She was also an avid sports fan of all Pittsburgh teams as well as a fan of the Mountaineers. Dot, her sister Glo, and her mother Tena, attended the first night game held at Forbes Field.
She is survived by her children: Sue (Tom) Thayer of Lisbon, OH, John (Carol) Burda of Beaver, PA., and Ed (Shellie) Burda of Elkins, WV.
Her grandchildren are Tena (Lou) Liberati, Julie (Jon) Witherow, Jason (Michelle) Burda, Miranda Booth, Matthew Burda, and Katie (Ray) LaMora. There are eleven great-grandchildren: Josh (Ana), Jacob, Madelyn Liberati, Heather Witherow, Emily Burda, Olivia Booth, Tyler and Lily Burda, and Logan and Felicity LaMora.
She was preceded in death by her husband John in 1990, her parents, and her sister Gloria Randour.
Father Bill Metheny will preside for the Catholic Funeral Liturgy at Sacred Heart Church on Saturday, August 19, 2023, at 2:00 pm. Interment will be held at Locust Hill Cemetery. Friends are invited to visit with the family at the Arner Funeral Chapel in Chester, Saturday, August 19, 2023, from 12:00 pm to 1:30 pm.
In lieu of flowers, as our mother loved being with her friends, take a friend to lunch and think of Dot.
