My grandpap was one of the greatest men I've ever known. He knew how to make us laugh, he cared about others before himself and always had a smile on his face. I am eternally grateful that God allowed me to have him in my life for 33 years and that my children got to know and love their great-grandfather (Pap-Pap Chaney). We have so many wonderful memories that can never be taken away, and for that, I am so thankful. Grandpap, you are loved and missed so much.

Funny at the bottom of this page is a math question. .............To let me know that he was OK, he would say 2+2=4. Dad was the smartest man I have ever known. Loved my dad. I am really not the sharpest crayon in the box, but he told me I could be an RN, and I did . He gave me a wonderful career ....I would not have even tried had he not told me I could do it. One thing I never doubted was his love for my mom . He was a great example of what to look for in a mate. He will be missed.

Don Chaney was many things. He was a fisherman, politician, hero, Christian, people-person, businessman, proud Mountaineer, story teller, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather. He was my grandfather and I couldn't be more proud. The world (especially Chester, West Virginia) will not be the same without him in it.
I know my grandma, the love of his life, was there to wrap her arms around him as soon as she could. We will always love and miss you, Grandpap.

My hero died on Wednesday morning, yes my Dad was my hero. It is said that actions are greater than words and my Dad proved this to be true. It was also said that he had a Santa clause syndrome- this was also true. My dad would give away the shirt off his back. My Dad taught me hard work which I am thankful. He also taught me to help those not as fortunate as me. My Dad didn't say he loved me very often-he didn't have to because I know he loved me with all his heart. My Dad was my hunting buddy- what memories of deer hunting with him that I have to cherish. My Dad was a good man-I can only hope that I can be half the man/father that he was. I know that he is now in heaven with mom and maybe doing a little hunting with his dad and Logan Wells. I love you Dad. Rest in peace.

We didn't think of Dad as an icon or a legend. He was just our Daddy. He taught us by example how to "pay it forward" and how to perform "random acts of kindness" long before these phrases were created. It was wonderful that we got to have him for so many years so that many of our grandchildren could get to know and love him. These young ones will revere him as a family legend and hopefully tell their grandchildren tales about Don's wonderful life and adventures. We already miss you Dad and always will. Love, Donna Jean

So sorry to hear of Don's passing. He was always one of the first ones Daddy ( Ed Goppert)went to see when he came home to Chester. Not many left from their class of 1940. Bet there is a reunion going on in heaven!
My condolences to his family.

Best Dad ever! Rest in peace. Finally together with Mom, the love of his life. We will miss you greatly. When God said go forth and multiply...you really did....many children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. What a great role model for all of us...what a great legacy. Love you, Dad...Nancy and Calvin

During this difficult time of loss and grief we keep you close to our hearts, in our thoughts and in our prayers. Your Dad and Mom were wonderful people. Growing up in the First Christian Church, I can still clearly see them sitting just a few rows up and to the left near the mirror there at the church. Your Dad and Mom were never too busy to give a smile and a wave or stop and talk for awhile. I will always keep fond memories of your family when I think of my hometown. God Bless you all at this time and Heaven certainly gained an angel this morning.

Hi Don's kids,
Sorry to hear Dad has left this old world but he ran a great race and I think he's probably glad to get up there with his old friends and Mom. I'll miss not getting to harass him when I come in for the reunion, but he's a part of my life like ya'all, since we all came from that little town we all family....
Love and hugs to all
Ruth Anne

I will always have my memories of Don teaching me how to hunt and being such a great person. He took me deer hunting when I was sixteen, and let me use his rifle to shoot my first deer. He also taught me how to field dress and skin a deer.
My condolences to the family.
He will be missed.
