Stephen A. Barnhart, age 68, of Salt Lake City, UT passed away at his home on May 7, 2019, after a lengthy illness. Born Feb. 6, 1951, he was raised in Chester, WV, where he was involved in Boy Scouts of America, Order of the Arrow and was a Scoutmaster in Chester for several years. After graduating from Oak Glen High School in 1969, he worked at Homer Laughlin China, National Church Supply, and helped to run Barnhart Arco in Chester.
After moving to Salt Lake City, Steve worked for BDL Structures and Pools, Inc., building commercial swimming pools, wave pools and waterparks in hotels and resorts, and installed lavish pools for private estates.
He was a quiet, but kind and generous soul, who was always on the go. Steve was always willing to help anyone in need. Although he had no children, he loved and adored his nieces, nephews and their children just as they were his own. His hobbies were running R/C cars and planes at the Salt Flats in Salt Lake City and watching NASCAR. He enjoyed being a member of the local American Legion and VFW Post 3586 in Salt Lake City.
Steve is preceded in death by his parents, Robert C. (Bob) and Frances (Ilene) Barnhart, grandparents, Bert and Tressa Barth, and Clyde (Babe) and Eva Barnhart of Chester and a nephew, Matthew Ryan Barnhart of Missouri. He is survived by two brothers, Gary C. Barnhart and wife Terry Beth of Platte City, MO, Harvey L. Barnhart and wife Julie of Salt Lake City, one sister Kathleen G. Barnhart Smith and her husband Neil of Chester, six nieces and nephews, Jeremy Barnhart, Dawn Hornsby, Erik Barnhart, Melanie Lillard, Ryan Smith, Stephanie Smith and nine great-nieces and nephews.
Burial arrangements are being handled by the Arner Funeral Chapel in Chester, WV. A private family memorial will be held at Locust Hill Cemetery in Chester, at a time, to be determined. In lieu of flowers, please send memorial donations to VFW Post 3586 in Salt Lake City, or any VFW or American Legion of your choice.
