Rev. James A. Reed of Newell passed peacefully in the presence of his loving family at the Valley Hospice Care Center North in Steubenville on Thursday, January 11, 2018, after a difficult struggle with cancer.

83 years old. Rev. Reed was born in Chester on October 4, 1934, to the late Arthur B. Reed and Mary E. Wedgewood Reed Barry.

An Episcopalian minister, Rev. Reed was associated with Brooke-Hancock Cluster and had pastored at St. Matthew’s in Chester as well as various churches throughout the cluster. A life-long member of St. Matthews, Jim was a 1954 graduate of Chester High School and the Pittsburgh Theology Seminary. He was a past secretary and treasurer of the Chester Kiwanis Club, he was also a member of the East Liverpool Hospital Chaplaincy Board.

Jim had suffered the loss of his wife, Phyllis Reed in 2001, his son, James A. Reed Jr., his step-father, Rev. Raymond Reed, as well as his brother, Jess Reed, sisters-in-law, Shirley and Pat Reed, and his brother-in-law, Jim Sayre.

Jim will be deeply missed by his family, children, Pamela Stivason and husband Jeff of Chester, and Cindy Watkins and husband Owen of Augusta, WV. Also, surviving are his siblings, Howard Reed of Bowling Green, Ky., Patricia Vuletic and husband Don of East Liverpool, Mary (Larry Icenhower) Sayre of East Liverpool. His loving grandchildren, Kaitlin (Corey Perkins) Curtis, and Logan (Briana) Curtis, great-grandchildren, Emily, Ethan, and Binley Curtis, and Gunner Thompson, and several nieces and nephews will also cherish his memories.

Services will be held on Monday, January 15, at 10:00 a.m. at the Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Chester with Bishop Mark Van Koevering and Rev. Phil Van Dam officiating. Interment will follow at the Locust Hill Cemetery. The family will be present to receive friends at the Arner Funeral Chapel in Chester on Sunday evening from 6-8 p.m.
