CANTON — Lester Virgle Hissom, 79, of Canton, passed away Sept. 9, 2017. He was born Dec. 19, 1937, in Newell, son of the late Okey and Eliza (Steed) Hissom.
Lester proudly served in the United States Marine Corp. He retired from the Weirton Steel Company, following 32 years of service. A former member of Pennsylvania Ave. UMC in East Liverpool; lifetime member of the USMC League; and was a member of the Boy Scouts of America for 50 years, where he held various leadership positions.
Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by his two brothers, Bernard and Junior Hissom.
Survivors include his loving wife of 58 years, Velma (Watson) Hissom; three children: David V. (Becky) Hissom, John V. (Maureen) Hissom, and Susan E. (Jeff) Barr; grandson Daniel V. Hissom; and sister, Shelby Jean Dalrymple. There are step granddaughters, and nieces and nephews also surviving.
Funeral service will be held Friday at 1 p.m. at the Arner Funeral Home in Chester. Calling hours are two hours prior to the service, 11 a.m.-1 p.m., with burial to follow in Shadow Lawn Cemetery in Newell.
Additional calling hours will be held Wednesday evening from 6-8 p.m. in Reed Funeral Home, Canton Chapel.
In lieu of flowers, the family request in his honor, if able, to make a blood donation to the local blood bank.
