James O. Smalley, 77, of Chester passed away at his home on Monday, October 30, 2017 following a difficult battle with Alzheimer Disease.

Jim was born in Pittsburgh on March 13, 1940 to the late Oliver and Thelma Illig Smalley

He worked 30 years as a carpenter with Union Local #420, beginning with the construction of the nuclear power station at Shippingport. Jim was a 1958 graduate of Hopewell High School, and he was an enthusiastic fly fisherman. He became very proficient at building his own fly fishing rods and lures. Jim was a master sculptor, having won a very prestigious award for one of his pieces from the sculpting society of Pittsburgh. Also he loved to play his banjo.

Jim was veteran of the United States Army. While stationed in Germany he met the love of his life, his wife Marlene Klippel Smalley who survives at home. She provided him with great comfort and care during his difficult illness.

Also surviving are his sons, Steve Smalley and his wife, Vivian of Chester, and Ralph Edward Smalley of Beloit, OH; his only granddaughter, Rachel Smalley; and one brother, George Smalley of Dover Delaware.

One sister, Donna Bebout preceded Jim in death.

In accordance with the family’s wishes, no services are planned and he is in the care of the Arner Funeral Chapel in Chester.
